It is also horrifying to those of us who had your "average" American school education- often, regarding African Americans, only slavery, the Emancipation Proclamation, and Martin Luther King Jr. are covered. The rest is glossed over or omitted completely- the Oregon Trail and the like get more pages. The Red Record is one of those books that could easily be excerpted to prove that everything was not hunky dory after the Emancipation Proclamation. Wells brought this detailed account to the public’s attention to promote outrage enough to pass anti lynching laws.She lived to see it happen in 1922, 11 years after this book’s publication and 9 years before her death. Of course I knew it happened, but seeing the names and dates listed, page after page , I guess just made it more real. The atrocities these men, women and yes, children faced were more than anyone, or skydiving being should face. My heart goes out to these people and their families. May their souls be at rest. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cosenza -- Every American needs to read this! : This book was not "great literature"; however, it was not written for that purpose. It was written to provide an organized and documented account of the great tragedy in our history. I closed my eyes to this story too long, though not denying its truth! I am thankful for the testimony of people like Miss Wells, and for her courage in preserving the knowledge of these events - that is, the murder of hundreds, thousands, of innocent (or innocent until proven guilty) African-Americans. This book really taught and demonstrated the legal system and how it still needs improving today. Sad to know that a constitution that was set to protect all men and women and give them the right to be proven innocent was thrown out due to pure hatred. And reading how a black woman’s virtue was not valued as much as that of a white woman’s had to be the most disturbing thing I’ve ever read. Although the events in this book are truly horrific it is a necessary read for all people of every walk of life. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2019 )

Everyone should read this book and, when I bought it, it was the cheapest edition - not a rip -off! So I disagree with the other (American) reviewer. This edition keeps what is important about the text in order to keep the price low. I'm going to buy copies for all my anti-racist friends. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 9, 2014 )
