However, good writing is good writing. It doesn't matter whether the setting involves steampunk technology, magic, dragons, or people with amazing super powers. Burke consistently develops real, believable characters who draw you into their world and make you care about them. Her specialties are people and relationships, whatever the genre. I rooted for Jake from the start and loved getting to see characters from the other series in here (you don't need to have read the other series). Baby Ruby was adorable. The plot was engaging, and the superpowers were creative and fun. I love the emphasis on family and being loved and lovable despite our faults or how others in the past have treated us. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Susan -- A great story : I enjoyed this story. It has great characters & magical powers. Jake is in a gang & when on a mission he and his brother are arrested. Jake manages to go to Camp Sable a place for troubled kids with magical powers. At first he fights the help that is offered but Marco & Layleh convince him to trust the help. Jake thinks his gang will rescue him but does he want to go back? A clean story with plenty of cool powers. I received this as an arc and I am glad. You don't need to be familiar with the earlier books to enjoy this one, but for those who have it's a great chance to catch up with some old friends who pop up throughout the story. Timeline wise this story takes place before "Reunion" and in retrospect "Reunion" does have some slight spoilers for this (and possibly the next) book. ( Reviewed in Australia on October 12, 2021 )
